This netbook was originally released with the Linux operating system only. Its sales were phenomenal and it has led to the creation of this new category. These machines are now available with both Windows and Linux operating systems but as usual if you want performance the the choice should be Linux.

Some manufactures such as Dell do not offer Linux in Australia while they do overseas, companies that discriminate against their users in this way should be discriminated against by users in turn, we do not recommend Dell.

The version of Linux offered with the Asus product is Xandros a commercial version of Linux which has all the codecs for a normal user to run the same sort of albeit different applications they would use on a windows machine. This makes a transition from Windows to Linux easy.

Other manufactures such as Acer, HP and Samsung have also released units in this category.

These machines can not be considered as a replacement for a standard Laptop as their performance keyboard and screens are sub optimal but they excel at portability ease of use and are rugged.
